Elites Podcast

For those of you who spend your MP3 time listening to stories, my story “Elites,” which was first published in Women of War has a new podcast version. It’s on Escape Pod. I’ve had a few other stories on Escape Pod as well, and I’ve listened to more than my share of other stories there. The site is worth checking out. Tweet This Post … Read entire article »

Indiana Jones and Me

I realized somewhere around May 17 or 18, when I discovered that our local theater was going to have a midnight show of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull on Wednesday, May 21 (actually May 22 at 12:01 a.m.), that I am a true fan. Of Indy. I became obsessed. I needed tickets. I needed them immediately. Let me explain. I hate spoilers. And these days, the culture is full of spoilers. Everyone wants to be the first to tell me the secrets of the movie or the current hot show. Even when you try to avoid spoilers, they attack you. For example, when the first major character died on Lost, I wasn’t able to watch the episode … Read entire article »

The Dude Abides

I’ve had a pleasant holiday weekend, but not a great one. So this afternoon, as I turned on NPR, I wasn’t in a bad mood, but I wasn’t in a great one. The first thing I heard was an analysis of the fictional character, The Dude, from one of my favorite movies (and definitely my favorite Cohen Brothers movie), The Big Lebowski. Here’s the NPR piece. Listen to it. Don’t read the transcript. I guarantee you’ll be smiling when it’s all over. Tweet This Post … Read entire article »

Workshops

Every few years, Dean and I teach workshops for professional writers who are either at the beginning of their careers (in other words, a few things sold) or at a crossroads in their careers (stuck in the same spot, unable to sell any more or just plain frustrated by the business). This is one of those teaching years. I’ve posted a list of the workshops on its own page. If you’re interested in any of them, contact my husband Dean Wesley Smith through his website at www.deanwesleysmith.com. Tweet This Post … Read entire article »

When The Whole World Looked Up

I have a new essay in the July Asimovs. The essay will probably be posted on the site when they upgrade for July. However, buy a copy of the issue. There’s always great short fiction in Asimovs. In fact, subscribing would be a good idea… Tweet This Post … Read entire article »

Inspiration

I wrote May’s Dated Essay of the Month in May of 1994. So clearly all the references are dated. Very dated. I do find that I’m fonder of The Stand than I used to be. And I did love that mini-series. I must say that Stephen King is one of my favorite writers. Maybe my very favorite. I’ve read his work since I found Carrie in 1975, and have been hooked ever since. I no longer think that good television is rare. Television has become excellent in the intervening 14 years. There are too many good shows now. I find myself recording hours and hours of TV, watching new stuff well into the summer. But the methods mentioned in here are exactly the same. … Read entire article »

A Beautiful Book

I just received my copies of the French edition of The Disappeared, published by Bragelonne. Not only is the cover stunning, but I lucked out with the translation as well. The translator is award-winning sf writer Elisabeth Vonarburg. Foreign editions are only as good as their translations, so I’m pleased to have The Retrieval Artist series in the hands of a master. You can find information on the French edition here and on Elisabeth Vonarburg here. Tweet This Post … Read entire article »
