A new story and a new column

I write a column for Jim Baen’s Universe called “Notes From the Buffer Zone,” and the latest went up earlier this month.  I somehow missed it. Also, the first in a series of related fantasy stories makes its appearance in the August JBU.  ”The Blitz Experience” is the first of four (which you can read separately) that will appear in JBU before the magazine goes away.  <sigh> You view the story here and the column, “Acceptable Nerds,” here. … Read entire article »

Asimov’s Reader’s Choice Award

I couldn’t make it to Worldcon this year, so Asimov’s kindly sent my award this month.  Here I am, showing it off in my office, the uninterested Sir Galahad of Kitten behind me.  Such fun!  Thanks to everyone who voted for “The Room of Lost Souls.” Much appreciated! … Read entire article »

Freelancer’s Survival Guide: Patience

Artwork donated by Pati Nagle. The Freelancer’s Survival Guide: Patience Kristine Kathryn Rusch Full disclosure time: I have no patience. Or very little patience. I do a good imitation of a person with patience in public, but in my everyday life, I have no idea why everything I want isn’t here the moment I want it. I do understand the irony of me writing a section of the guide on patience, but as someone who lacks something but still desires it, I have made a study of patience. Patience is essential to building a business, any business. You must do things methodically. You must do them in a particular order, and even then, you might not get an immediate response. This last bit is a particularly difficult part of owning your own … Read entire article »

June 2009 Recommended Reading List

I’m still behind on my posting.  This should be July, but I haven’t finished preparing it for uploading.  I hoped to have June up a month ago.  Ah well.  Here’s what I wrote at the end of June: Another strangely busy month, but I got a lot more reading done—and it was good reading.  Some months it hasn’t been. In fact, as a reading month, it was one of the best, since I discovered a new writer, rediscovered an old favorite, and fell madly in love with a book.  Haven’t done that last in quite a while. June, 2009 Bascomb, Neal, Hunting Eichmann, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2009. I’ve been reading a lot of research books for the stories I’m writing for Jim Baen’s Universe.  Many are unbelievably dull, even when dealing with … Read entire article »

Freelancer’s Survival Guide: Deadlines

Artwork donated by Pati Nagle. The Freelancer’s Survival Guide: Deadlines Kristine Kathryn Rusch Here’s the problem with waiting until the last minute to do something: the day arrives and it is the worst possible day to do that thing. Take today, for example. I have a migraine, I didn’t sleep much, it’s the hottest day of the year so far, and we’re still moving. In fact, we slated today to do a lot of the major moving, so I’ve been picking, lifting, walking, and cleaning for the past six hours with only one break for dinner, which I inhaled. I’m still cleaning—as I write this, the washing machine is humming and so is the dishwasher (with its third load)—because once you move something from Point A to Point B, you realize just how dirty … Read entire article »
