Two New Stories in the Same Anthology

Yeah, I got a little wacky.  Here’s the story behind the stories.  Dean and I put on a workshop with Denise Little of Tekno Books.  Denise gives the writers who attend a short story assignment for an active anthology.  The Trouble With Heroes was the assignment anthology.  Denise didn’t pick all of the stories submitted from the workshop for the antho, but honestly, about 95% of the stories here came from it. I loved the anthology’s idea, so after I wrote one story, I wrote another.  One was clearly a Kristine Grayson story, one wasn’t. But I told Denise to pick one. She, being the stubborn editor that she is, didn’t listen to me.  So both stories are in the volume. You can pick it up at your local bookstore or order … Read entire article »

Freelancer’s Survival Guide: Negotiation Part Three

The Freelancer’s Survival Guide: Negotiation Part Three Kristine Kathryn Rusch I knew negotiation was going to be a tough topic.  But I thought it would be tough for me, not for you guys. Instead, I’m seeing a lot of private comments and some great blogging on the topic, and I’m realizing that negotiation is hard for most of us. On one of my e-mail lists, we’re discussing taming your inner 12-year-old in a business situation.  You know what I mean: the core you, the scared or angry or shy person hidden behind your adult façade. Too many of us let our inner twelve-year-olds rule our life.  My inner twelve-year-old is very shy.  When I was twelve, I had switched schools from a pampered elitist school for the children of college professors to … Read entire article »

Freelancer’s Survival Guide: Negotiation, Part Two

The Freelancer’s Survival Guide: Negotiation Part Two Kristine Kathryn Rusch I got a lot of interesting responses to last week’s introduction to negotiation section, some of which folks posted in the comments section.  I suggest you look at those, particularly the comment by Randy Tatano, before you start this section. (And thank you, my friends, for reinforcing the fact that I am not charming.  So nice to know that I perceive myself accurately. <VBG>) Last week, I stated the premise that everything is negotiable.  Then I gave the rules for a negotiation. They are: 1. Know What You Want. 2. Ask. 3. Be Prepared to Walk Away. 4. Stay Calm. 5. Never Reveal Your Entire Hand. 6. Don’t Flip-Flop. All of them apply to any negotiation. But there’s something I did not discuss last week that needs to be discussed … Read entire article »

Corpse Vision

Baen’s Universe will close up shop in the Spring, but it still has a lot of life left in it. The December issue has just come out with a story of mine called “Corpse Vision,” set in Paris in the 1920s.  It also carries one of my columns, “Stalled Conversations, Global Visions, and the Future.” You can find “Corpse Vision” here: http://www.baens-universe.com/articles/Corpse_Vision And the column here: http://www.baens-universe.com/ In addition to my stuff, you can find a new David Gerrold story (always a cause for celebration in my book), a new Mike Resnick story (again, time to celebrate), and lots of other good fiction, as well as the usual suspects doing columns.  Good reading.  Check out the entire issue here. … Read entire article »
