September 2010 Recommended Reading List

September was as good a reading month as I had hoped it would be.  I read a number of wonderful things on my long flights and during my travels.  Much of what I read was on Kindle and on my iPhone.  I do have a rant below about format, simply because some major publishers don’t seem to care about format at all. Which is odd, because they care about the format of their print books. Not as much magazine reading, but a lot more novel reading. Out of all the reading I did—and it was a lot—here are the writings I recommend. September, 2010 Clark, Rod, “Voice Over: Of Pencils and Piracies,” Rosebud, Summer/Fall, 2010.  Thirty years ago, only the people who lived in Madison, Wisconsin, and listened to WORT radio … Read entire article »

The Business Rusch: Understanding Publishing (Changing Times Part 2)

< The Business Rusch: Understanding Publishing (Changing Times Continued) Kristine Kathryn Rusch As I mentioned last week, I’m going to finally examine the elephant in the room—the changes in my industry, publishing.  I realize that many of you reading this blog aren’t in publishing, but you do run businesses.  I hope that the blogs I write in the next few weeks will remain relevant to you.  I also hope you will indulge me, even if you don’t find any information that you can use in your own business.  After all, you’re readers, and this change will have an impact on how you receive (and consume) your reading material. Last week’s column was an overview.  Please read it before you read this one. This week’s post will also be something of an overview, because the more … Read entire article »

The Business Rusch: Changing Times (Overview)

The Business Rusch: Changing Times (Overview) Kristine Kathryn Rusch As I have mentioned many times in the past, my industry—publishing—is changing.  I have written a few posts about it, but generally, I have avoided the topic.  My reason is simple: this business blog, and the Freelancer’s Guide before it, are geared toward the general business reader, not just toward everyone in the publishing industry. However, the changes in publishing have become, at least to me, the elephant in the room.  I’m going to deal with them in the next few posts, and I hope you general business readers who are not in publishing give me some leeway. After all, these changes do have an effect on you.  You’re all readers and consumers of electronic publishing or you wouldn’t visit this blog.  I have a … Read entire article »

The Business Rusch: Responsibility

The Business Rusch: Responsibility Kristine Kathryn Rusch Recently, a major agent in the science fiction and fantasy field died unexpectedly.  Many of you know who I’m talking about, and many of you don’t.  I’m not naming him here because his death—sad and surprising as it was—is not the topic of this column.  In fact, I’m not mentioning his name because I don’t want you to think I’m writing this column about him, his clients, or anyone he’s associated with. It was just that his death, coming while I’m focusing on business for the completion of The Freelancer’s Survival Guide, put me in mind of my mother.  Seriously.  My mother was a housewife.  Technically, she didn’t have a career. But she had a partner—my father—and they split the tasks of their lives … Read entire article »

Freelancer’s Guide Update

First, I want to thank everyone who sent me quotes last week.  I was humbled by the quick response and I’m very appreciative of the support. We have a great cover design now, which I’ll be able to unveil in a few days. The book is moving apace. Looks like we’ll have electronic copies within a few weeks, and trade paper copies by mid-November, barring unforeseens. More news when I have it! … Read entire article »

The Business Rusch: International Travel Tips Part Two

The Business Rusch: International Travel Tips Part Two Kristine Kathryn Rusch Great discussions after last week’s post on International Travel Tips.  Read the comments section.    I learned things. I’m sure you will too. I’m going to touch on a few things that people said in the comments section, but I’m not going to reiterate it for you. There’s just too much good stuff.  Take a peak, not just for the advice, but for the great stories as well. Last week, I discussed the things you should do as you’re planning your trip.  I started with what you should do the moment you know you’re going out of the country (passports, etc), and I barely got past buying your plane ticket, and the considerations you should have there. I’m still in the planning … Read entire article »

Contest!

Okay, here’s something I’ve never tried before.  The good folks at BenBella Books gave me the opportunity to give away two copies of Filled With Glee, their upcoming unauthorized book on the TV series Glee. I have an essay in the volume.  You can read the beginning of the essay–which is actually about the music of Glee (although you can’t tell from the excerpt)–on their website here. The table of contents is here, and includes such Gleeks as A.M. Dellamonica and Jennifer Crusie. Since I’ve never done a contest before, this is an experiment for me too.  And here’s what some of my more successful contest-blogging friends have advised me to do.  Please comment below on what you like about Glee. I’ll pick two names from the comments, one for the … Read entire article »
