Two New Stories Published

My story, “Corpse Vision,” which initially appeared in Baen’s Universe is now available in The Best Paranormal Crime Stories Ever Told edited by Martin H. Greenberg and John Helfers.  You should be able to find the volume in your favorite bookstore or order it here. The anthology Love and Rockets, edited by Martin H. Greenberg and Kerrie Hughes, has my story “Drinking Games.”  RT Book Reviews calls my story the sexiest one on the volume.  The story is also the basis for a new novel series, Assassins in Love, which I will publish under the name Kris DeLake through Sourcebooks in 2012.  You can find the anthology at your favorite bookstore or order it here. … Read entire article »

The Business Rusch: Midlist Writers (Changing Times Part 11)

The Business Rusch: Midlist Writers (Changing Times Part Eleven) Kristine Kathryn Rusch When I started this series on the changing times in publishing, I was responding to a cacophony of voices.  Two of those voices were from published writers on the opposite ends of the e-book spectrum—New York Times bestselling author, Scott Turow, president of the Authors Guild, and mystery writer J.A. Konrath who, because of his successful early adoption of e-publishing, has become a kind of guru of self-publishing. Both men are highly visible, both are firm in their opinions, and both seem to believe that all writers have the same problems. Nothing could be further from the truth.  Writers differ as much (maybe more) than their books differ.  Writers, depending on where they stand at this point in their careers, have different … Read entire article »

November 2010 Recommended Reading List

Even though I extol the virtues of electronic books, there’s still something to be said for going to the bookstore.  I picked up the Barrowcliffe below because it was on Powells Books (airport) recommended shelf.  I found half a dozen books in stores this week that I wouldn’t have seen otherwise. I read a lot in November, but much of it was newspapers and research materials. When I did read books, they were thick and dense.  One (recommended below) made me read slowly for 700 pages.  I loved what I read, but it took some reading time away from other things. Still, in November, I found a lot of literature to love.  Here’s what I believe is worth recommending: November, 2010 Barrowcliffe, Mark, The Elfish Gene: Dungeons, Dragons and Growing … Read entire article »

The Business Rusch: Those Pesky Bestselling Writers Again (Changing Times Part Ten)

The Business Rusch: Those Pesky Bestselling Writers Again (Changing Times Part Ten) Kristine Kathryn Rusch I finished the first draft of the book yesterday, my brain is made of Swiss cheese, and now I’m faced with this post.  When I finish it, I’ll collapse on the couch and let visions of sugar plums dance in my head for a few days.  Or I would, if I knew what sugar plums were. Anyway…it has taken me three posts to get to the place where I can comfortably make my point about bestselling writers.  If you haven’t read the previous posts, they are an overview on writers and the changes in publishing, a post on what bestsellers actually are, and a post about what bestsellers get from their publishers.  Please look at those before … Read entire article »

An Unsuitable Job For A Woman

J. Kingston Pierce asked me to participate in The Rap Sheet’s forgotten book series.  I chose a book not so much forgotten as ignored, P.D. James’s An Unsuitable Job For A Woman. And I learned something that I had missed from the folks who commented.  So it’s a good day for me as well.  You can find the essay here. Read the comments too. … Read entire article »

The Business Rusch: Bestselling Writers Continued (Changing Times Part 9)

The Business Rusch: Bestselling Writers Continued (Changing Times Part Nine) Kristine Kathryn Rusch It’s dark and raining and cold, prime winter weather here on the Oregon Coast.  I have a hot mug of tea beside me, and holiday music on the stereo (iPod dock, if you want accuracy).  I have 50 to 100 pages to go on my current novel, and I’d like to finish it before Christmas.  I am so deep in the book that I forgot what day of the week it was until I went on Twitter during a break. And then I realized I had to write this blog.  To say that I am reluctantly approaching this week’s topic is an understatement. But my streak of posting every single Thursday since the first week of April 2009 brought me here.  … Read entire article »
