The Business Rusch: More Modern Writer Survival Skills (Changing Times Part 19)

The Business Rusch: More Modern Writer Survival Skills (Changing Times Part Nineteen) Kristine Kathryn Rusch This week hasn’t been quite as heady as last week was in publishing, but part of that is because the industry is trying to face the reality of the Borders bankruptcy filing.  Most of the publishing blogs that I’ve read this week have dealt with the potential impact of that filing.  Some have been defensive (with one editor saying on Twitter that she has 9 deals pending, so everything is fine) to gloating (some writers claiming again that the end times are upon us) to vaguely worried (including me). Other pieces of news that floated past my desk went from the ridiculous to the surprising.  My favorite in the ridiculous category? Publisher’s Lunch’s discussion of the New … Read entire article »

New Nonfiction

I’ve been a bit lax in letting you know about my recent nonfiction. My bimonthly column just appeared on the Grantville Gazette website.  This column deals with the influence of teenagers on the formation of both fandom and conventions.  You can find it here. The other bit of nonfiction isn’t really mine so much.  It is an interview with me also about conventions. This one is about proper behavior at a con.  I do sound a bit grumpy, but you know, I can get that way sometimes. There’s some very good advice contained herein, and it ain’t all mine.  Check it out here. … Read entire article »

Sins of the Blood Reissued!

Vampire Days continue with this announcement: WMG Publishing has reissued my vampire novel, Sins of the Blood.  Those of you who bought my romance novels in recent weeks, be warned: This novel is the opposite of those. This is not a Twilight type of vampire story.  This is a horror novel, and quite dark.  It has gotten great reviews and has received a cult following over the years. Here’s more on the book.  You can order it from the various e-book outlets including Kindle, Barnes & Noble, and Smashwords. There will be a trade paper in the summer.  I’ll announce it when it arrives.  Here’s the link to  an excerpt from the Smashwords link (because I’m too lazy to do an excerpt myself).  Enjoy! Finally, Kristine Kathryn Rusch’s graphic tale of a world … Read entire article »

BBC, Vampires, and Me

I’m kicking off Vampire Days on my blog.  First up, an audio surprise: On Sunday, BBC Radio 7 will air the second part in its Short History of Vampires.  That part is my short story, “Hero Dust.”  If you’re in England, you can listen on BBC Radio 7 live at 18:30 or 00:30.  Or you can listen on the web at those times.  (Those are GMT, so do your own time zone subtraction or addition.)  Here’s the link. After it initially airs, it’ll be on the BBC Radio 7 site for about a week.  It’s fun and worth listening to. Those of you who just want to read the story, you can find it on Kindle, Smashwords, Barnes & Noble. Other formats available. … Read entire article »

The Business Rusch: Modern Writer Survival Skills (Changing Times Part 18)

The Business Rusch: Modern Writer Survival Skills (Changing Times Part Eighteen) Kristine Kathryn Rusch I was going to title this installment “Beginning Writers Part Three,” but I think that title is too exclusive. Because all writers are going to need the skill sets I’m going to describe below to get through these changes in publishing. My crystal ball is refusing to tell me whether or not it’s best for beginning writers to continue to pound on the doors of Big Publishing or to go it alone.  As many commenters on last week’s post noted, it’s not an either-or choice, for any writer.  Right now, I’m walking both paths—doing frontlist titles with Big Publishing and with a small publisher that I’m involved with.  I’m also bringing my backlist—all of it—back into print, which … Read entire article »

The Mid-Month Novel Excerpt: Diving Into the Wreck

Once per month, I’ll post an excerpt from a published novel of mine and hope that you’ll be intrigued enough to find the rest of the book.  I decided to start with Diving into the Wreck because the next book set in that universe, City of Ruins, will be out in May. This will give you time to read Diving before City comes out. You can find ordering information from a variety of sources at the end of the excerpt.  Or follow this link now. Here’s the back cover information: Boss loves to dive historical ships, derelict spacecraft found adrift in the blackness between the stars. Sometimes she salvages for money, but mostly she’s an active historian. She wants to know about the past–to experience it firsthand. Once she’s dived the … Read entire article »

Watching The Music Dance

Jonathan Strahan has included my short story, “Watching The Music Dance,” in his marvelous Engineering Infinity anthology, along with stories by Stephen Baxter, Gregory Benford, Kathleen Ann Goonan, Charles Stross, and a lot of other good folk.  You can find the book in trade paper, mass market paper, or electronic.  Your favorite bookstore should have copies or you can order one here. … Read entire article »

The Business Rusch: Beginning Writers Again–Sort Of (Changing Times Part 17)

The Business Rusch: Beginning Writers Again—Sort of (Changing Times Part Seventeen) Kristine Kathryn Rusch Wow. The changes keep coming, dozens in the space of a week.  I have watched this kind of change from the outside for years in other industries, studied it in my history classes, continue to read about it in my history books.  I know that paradigm shifts are hard on everyone involved, and I’ve often wondered what it feels like to be in the middle of one.  Would I know? Would I take action? Would I take the right action? Well, I’m discovering the answers to those questions right now because of the rapid change in publishing. I do know that the shift is happening, and am rather startled at the long time professionals who are trying exceedingly hard … Read entire article »
