The Business Rusch: Smackdown!!!!!

The Business Rusch: Smackdown!!!!! Kristine Kathryn Rusch   What passes for American journalism these days loves a good smackdown, and a week ago Monday, the Journalists Who Cover Publishing got one.  On that day, some nervous publishing executives, afraid they wouldn’t get a hot deal, leaked to the press that Amanda Hocking, “darling of the indie world,” as one blog called her, was in negotiations for a million dollar book deal.  On that same day, New York Times bestseller Barry Eisler announced that he was walking away from a half-million dollar book contract with St. Martins Press to publish that book (and future books) himself. Smackdown!!! Who was right? Who was wrong? Because in what passes for American journalism these days, there are only two sides and no shades of gray. So if Eisler … Read entire article »

The Business Rusch: Pushing The Envelope

The Business Rusch: Pushing The Envelope Kristine Kathryn Rusch   Monday morning, I ripped off the previous page on my Pearls Before Swine 2011 Day-To-Day Calendar to find Pig and Rat, sitting at a table.  On the table, a steaming cup of coffee and an envelope.  Pig’s hand (paw?) is on the edge of the envelope. Rat asks him, “What are you doing?” Pig says, “Trying to see why everyone thinks this is so risky.” Second Panel: Rat says, “Why what’s so risky?” Pig says, “Pushing the envelope.” Final panel: Pig sits alone, bruised and covered in coffee, his ruined mug next to him, and the rolled-up envelope stuck in his nose.  “Now I see why,” he says to himself. I laughed hard when I saw that and thought of both Barry Eisler and J.A. Konrath.  They made an announcement … Read entire article »

An SF Podcast and a Mystery Interview

Okay, the interview is not a mystery as in whodunnit.  It’s an interview about mysteries, specifically mine.  The interview mostly focuses on the use of setting in mystery fiction, which is one of my favorite topics.  You can find the interview on the Scene of the Crime blog. The podcast is a discussion between me and the guys at SF Signal.  Patrick Hester, John Patterson, and John DeNardo did not gang up on me; they asked wonderful questions and we had a lot of fun.  You can download or listen to the podcast on the SF Signal Podcast site. … Read entire article »

Show Trial

Back in September, I went to Germany for as the guest of honor for Elstercon in Leipzig.  I took time on that trip to visit Nuremberg for research on a book.  The book isn’t done; it’s still percolating.  But the first short story from that trip–a novella, actually–has just appeared. The story is called “Show Trial,” and it’s online for free in the current issue of Subterranean Magazine.  You can read the entire story here. If you want to read the posts about Nuremberg, there are three of them, but this one is the relevant one to the story.  You can find the others if you click the “travel” link. Also, I’ve been noodling around in this made-up World War II world for some time now, and writing stories that will eventually inform … Read entire article »

The Business Rusch: Trust Me

The Business Rusch: Trust Me Kristine Kathryn Rusch Last week, I declared The Changing Times in Publishing series finished primarily so I could stop using that subheader in my posts.  The times continue to change, and I’m going to stick with the topic for a while. I had hoped to make The Changing Times in Publishing another book, like The Freelancer’s Survival Guide, but so many of the changes are happening so quickly that even if I release the book as an e-book—after I’ve organized everything, edited it, had someone else edit it, copy edit it, and put it up (a month’s work, minimum)—a goodly portion of the information in the posts might need updating. I’ve had a few publishers ask me for parts of the book, and I’m even hesitant to … Read entire article »

Mid-Month Novel Excerpt: The Disappeared

Once per month, I’ll publish an excerpt of one of my novels, and I hope you’ll be intrigued enough to buy the rest of the book.  I began this practice last month with Diving into the Wreck. Unlike the free fiction I put up every Monday, the novel excerpts will remain on the site.  If you want to read the opening to Diving, click here. This month, I’ve excerpted The Disappeared, the first in my Retrieval Artist series.  This is a USA Today bestselling series, and the very first novella in the series was nominated for a Hugo. You’ll find ordering information at the end of this post. Here’s the back cover copy, followed by the excerpt and the ordering information. New York Times bestselling author Orson Scott Card calls … Read entire article »

Simply Irresistible Reissued!

First, look at this marvelous cover for Simply Irresistible.  It’s irresistible, right?  I love it.  Soooo much better than the original cover from a few years ago.  I can’t wait to share the full wrap cover with you when the trade paper version comes out in a few months. But, as you can tell, Simply Irresistible is now available as an e-book.  You can get it on your Kindle, Nook, or from Smashwords.  Other e-bookstores should have it as well.  And here’s the blurb and a link to the free excerpt on Smashwords, so that you’ll know if the book is for you: Dexter Grant, the inspiration for the greatest superhero of all time, lives in reduced circumstances. Now he runs a pet store in Portland, Oregon, and privately calls himself a … Read entire article »
