Strange Divisions & Alien Territories

Keith Brooke has done a tremendous job of editing Strange Divisions & Alien Territories: The Sub-genres of Science Fiction. This is a very readable, extremely entertaining textbook for the college level, aimed at sf classes and writers. I’ve just started reading it, and it’s wonderful. I’m learning stuff, and having a good time along the way. Keith asked working sf writers to contribute essays, which is why this book is so well done. He asked me to contribute a piece on alternate history. I had fun writing it. I got to reread some favorite books.

The only problem is the price. It’s a British book, and a textbook at that, so it’s got a hefty U.S. price tag. Still, you might want to get it and share it with your writerly friends. You can order a copy here. (I checked: the price is similar on Amazon’s UK site, so you may as well get the U.S. version.) Enjoy!

  1. I hope Mr. Brooke and his publisher will have a Kindle version. I’ve pretty much stopped buying physical books except where I have no choice.

I hope so too, Martin, but you never know with traditional publishers. My experience with British publishers is that they wait 6 months or more for the Kindle version.

I want to get this! Gonna have to wait, though. I just dropped a bomb on my wallet signing up for that seminar in April/May that you and Dean will be at in Vegas. Can’t wait to meet you both! 😀

Thanks for posting this book. I’ll have to wishlist it for later.
