I'm struggling through a bunch of books on the topic now, Ryan. I'm still astonished at how little we all know about what to do about big things. I prefer superheroes, who jump in. Wish the real world were like that. :-)

Thanks for the reminder of Mary Balogh's latest. I don't always love her books, but several of my favorite historial romances were written by her. (Funny how that works.) I love me a wounded big guy, so I'll be sure to savor this one.

Thanks for the recommendation and for your remarkable blog. Just wanted to take slight exception to your reservation about Dream Lake concerning the alcoholic who stopped drinking without getting outside help. I stopped 25 years ago on my own. I know a couple of others who've done the same. I had done lots of reading, was well aware of my problem, and was ready. I don't recommend this path, but there's no one way out of the thicket. It's probably true that for most people outside help is the best solution, but the programs don't work for everyone and, despite the similarities across addictions, individuals may sometimes save themselves in unorthodox manners.

I can't begin to fathom how astounding it was to see the New York Scifi Issue for someone who's read it like you. As someone who's only glanced at it, I went o_o!

I keep meaning to read more about the 2008 near-depression but like you said it's so bloody scary and stomach churning that's a hard subject to explore with any depth.

I think I have a strong stomach but the more I find out about how deeply strange and creepy so many things are, it gets challenged all the time.
