The Business Rusch: Bad Decisions and the Midlist Writer (Changing Times Part 15)
The Business Rusch: Bad Decisions and The Midlist Writer (Changing Times Part Fifteen) Kristine Kathryn Rusch Last week, I ended my blog with this happy thought: “Looking in my crystal ball, I worry that the writers who will get scammed, who will lose actual fortunes, won’t be the beginners or the bestsellers. It’ll be the established midlist writer.” As I sat down to write on Wednesday morning, after a trip to Chattanooga, Tennessee which involved a lot of discussions with writers plus a ton of e-mail/questions/reading when I returned, I realized that I needed to change this week’s topic just a tad. I had planned to call this segment “Scams and the Midlist Writer,” but really, seriously, the problems that midlist writers will have—are having if the truth be told—go beyond scams. … Read entire article »

The Business Rusch: Writers-The Overview (Changing Times Part Seven)
The Business Rusch: Writers—The Overview (Changing Times Part Seven) Kristine Kathryn Rusch I’ll be honest with you: I would not have started this series on the changes in the publishing industry if I had known how much bizarre e-mail it would generate for me. I hadn’t realized that I had entered an area that for some writers incites a fervor that borders on religious. I have been a reporter, historian, and a fiction writer my entire life. I think the impulses that led me to those three fields have been exactly the same: I believe that once people have information, they will use that information to improve their lives. That’s the impetus behind my Freelancer’s Survival Guide which you can still get for free on this website even though I have finished it … Read entire article »

Freelancer’s Survival Guide update
It’s been a long saga on this project. WMG has just published the electronic book. I’ll have a link to that below. They tell me the actual paper version will be out by the end of the month. I’ve been sending e-mails to everyone who donated while I wrote the guide, so that I could send the promised free copy. Those of you who haven’t heard from me, please check your spam filter or e-mail me directly. I’ll check your name against the list, then send along the copy of the Guide. Thanks, everyone, for the support. I honestly, truly, could not have written this book without you. For those of you who’d like to buy a copy, here’s the Amazon link. The e-book will also be available on all the other … Read entire article »

The Business Rusch: Changing Times (Overview)
The Business Rusch: Changing Times (Overview) Kristine Kathryn Rusch As I have mentioned many times in the past, my industry—publishing—is changing. I have written a few posts about it, but generally, I have avoided the topic. My reason is simple: this business blog, and the Freelancer’s Guide before it, are geared toward the general business reader, not just toward everyone in the publishing industry. However, the changes in publishing have become, at least to me, the elephant in the room. I’m going to deal with them in the next few posts, and I hope you general business readers who are not in publishing give me some leeway. After all, these changes do have an effect on you. You’re all readers and consumers of electronic publishing or you wouldn’t visit this blog. I have a … Read entire article »

Freelancer’s Guide Update
First, I want to thank everyone who sent me quotes last week. I was humbled by the quick response and I’m very appreciative of the support. We have a great cover design now, which I’ll be able to unveil in a few days. The book is moving apace. Looks like we’ll have electronic copies within a few weeks, and trade paper copies by mid-November, barring unforeseens. More news when I have it! Tweet This Post … Read entire article »
