E-Books

I am slowly putting my entire inventory into e-book format.  Below are the e-books in haphazard chronological order.  If you want e-books of a particular type, check out the pages attached to this one.  There the books are alphabetically by genre. Each book will eventually be available in all e-book formats. If you want a particular format, and the book isn’t up on that format yet, hit the Smashwords link.

Here’s the newest Freelancers Guide Short Book:

The largest Five Story collection–Five Short Novels:

Five novellas, or short novels, for about 120,000 words of fiction, which is much larger than most fantasy novels. In this collection, you’ll find “Coolhunting,” “Broken Windchimes,” “Dragon’s Tooth,” “The Recovery Man’s Bargain,” and “The Spires of Denon.”  Three are from ongoing series–Abracadabra Inc. (“Dragon’s Tooth”), The Retrieval Artist (“The Recovery Man’s Bargain”), and the Diving universe (“The Spires of Denon.”)  The other two are stand-alone award winners.  You can also get all five as single books.

Kindle, Scribd, Smashwords.

What these five stories have in common is this: They’re set in Oregon and I wrote them.  Otherwise, they’re a group of very diverse tales.  Two are nominally sf (“The One That Got Away” and “Going Native”), two are mystery (“Patriotic Gestures” and “The Moorhead House”) and one is…well…just a Kris story (and one of my favorites): “The Amazing Quizmo.”  There will be other five-story collections with matching settings. This just happens to be the first, and set in my home state.  Go figure.

As you can probably tell, every now and then I write something really strange.  ”The One That Got Away” involves blackjack, UFOs, casinos, and people on the run.  And yes, it fits into the really strange category.

“Flower Fairies” first appeared in Realms of Fantasy.  It’s a gentle urban fantasy set in, of all places, a funeral home.  The opening image came to me in a dream, which doesn’t happen very often.

Set in Paris, this short novel is part of the upcoming Abracadabra Incorporated series. An urban fantasy with magic, thieves, and maybe even a dragon.

Five stories for the price of three! In this collection, you’ll find the heartwarming “Flower Fairies,” the whimsical “The Poop Thief,” the outrageous “Say Hello To My Little Friend,” the political vampire tale, “Victims,” and a tale of high school gone wrong, “Domestic Magic.”

One of my own personal favorite mystery stories, “Scrawny Pete,” about a cat and a hard-bitten reporter.

Available on KindleScribd, and Smashwords

Darren thinks of himself as the Amazing Quizmo, God of All Answers.  Really, he’s a bike messenger who runs bar trivia games.  But he’s competitive…and undefeated.  Will he stay that way?

Available on KindleScribd, and Smashwords

In a world with transporters, people remain the same–complaining about the difficulties of travel. Only transporter travel might leave you changed.  That’s what one reporter learns–or does he?

Available on KindleScribdSmashwords

If you would rather buy a group of stories for a lower price than buying the individual stories, the imprint Five Story Publishing is doing (you guessed it!) five story collections.  The first, a collection of my cat stories, is below.  Watch for more collections in the coming weeks.  I’ll notify you of them here as well.

Five Feline Fancies contains “Scrawny Pete,” “Destiny,” “The Secret Lives of Cats,” “The Poop Thief,” and “What Fluffy Knew.”

WMG Publishing has just published my short story, “Destiny,” which is a Fey story. It features Solanda the Shapeshifter and takes place before the novels do.

You can find the story in e-book format on Kindle, Scribd, or Smashwords. Eventually the story will be in other formats (it takes a while for the others to post the story), but if you want an iBook format or a Mobi format, Smashwords provides it.

A Shamus Award nominee. Pita Cardena runs a very small law firm that is suffocating under a very big cast–until she makes a discovery.

The most picked on girl in school has a nightmare about one of the cool kids. No problem, except that the nightmare might be a vision that he’s trying to kill people. Who will believe her?

Nominated for the Sidewise Award for Best Alternate History, “G-Men” also got chosen for two year’s best collections–one in mystery and one in science fiction. What would have happened if J. Edgar Hoover got murdered in 1964?

Dusty cleans crime scenes, and the one she can’t forget is at the Moorhead House. Did she–and the police–misinterpret what happened there? Voted one of the top ten stories of the year by readers of Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine.

Do politics and vampires mix? Especially when there’s a cover-up, a madam, and some shady goings-on? That’s for Reese, a political fixer, to decide. Quickly. Before something else goes wrong.

“What Fluffy Knew,” originally a tribute to my cat Ashley, has become one of my most talked about stories. Fluffy, a princessy white cat who lives a charmed life as an indoor cat, discovers, and confronts, an alien invasion–all without leaving the house. First published in an anthology, “Fluffy” has appeared in all kinds of places, including Read Magazine, which–for those of you as old as I am–used to be called Weekly Reader, and was handed out in schools.

You can buy your own personal e-copy of “Fluffy” in these places:

Or, if you prefer an audio version, listen to this lovely podcast from the Drabblecast here.

“The Paparazzi of Dreams,” which is an sf/mystery/cyberpunky thing that I first published in Analog in 2004. What if you can record dreams–and play them back? What if the paparazzi could steal them? What if the dreams weren’t quite what you’d expect?

You can download this on:

Kindle, Scribd, Smashwords

“Cowboy Grace,” with its Western title and its mystery plot, first appeared in an anthology that had mostly sf stories (It was a showcase anthology for authors of Golden Gryphon Press, so it’s not as out of place as it sounds). “Cowboy Grace” got nominated for an Edgar for Best Mystery Short Story of the Year.

You can find “Cowboy Grace” on Kindle, Scribd, and Smashwords, as well as other markets.

“Say Hello To My Little Friend” first appeared in Imaginary Friends, and there is an imaginary friend in the story. Or is there?

You can find “Say Hello To My Little Friend” on Kindle, Scribd, Smashwords, and other markets.

“What The Monster Saw” is a mystery story first published last year in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine. The story is about young Kyle Worthington, only son of one of New York City’s richest men. Kyle discovers a body in an alley and either has to step up to help solve the crime, or turn into a man just like his father.

You can find copies in various downloadable formats on:

“Broken Windchimes” is a short science fiction novel (a novella) that won the 2009 Asimov’s Reader’s Choice Award. If you missed it in Asimov’s, you can find it here. Just click on the links.

Kindle, Smashwords, Scribd.

“The Secret Lives of Cats,” a mystery story, won the Ellery Queen Readers’ Choice Award, and got nominated for the Anthony Award.

“The Poop Thief” is an urban fantasy story that deals with familiars, a store that sells familiars…and an unusual problem.

REcovery Man's Bargain

Last January/February, Analog published my long novella, “The Recovery Man’s Bargain.” It is a stand-alone story in the Retrieval Artist universe. But those of you who have read the novel The Recovery Man might really like this, since the action takes place at the same time as the novel.

You can download The Recovery’s Bargain to read on computer or e-reader on Scribd at:

And you can order the Kindle edition here.
