Analog has just published my short story, “Red Letter Day.” Subscription copies have arrived, which means this should be on the newsstand in a week or so. It’s not on the website yet, but will be shortly. And you can order electronic editions of the magazine as well through Fictionwise and the Kindle store.

I know all about not being able to read enough. I read Men’s Health over the weekend, I’m now reading FICTION IS FOLKS by Robert Newton Peck (which is a great analysis of the power of characterization in fiction), and on deck are a book on Setting and a collection of Poe’s short stories.
I am also about 200 pages in to Dune: House Atreides.
And I want to read some Shakespeare (never did pay attention to that in school), and I think Moby Dick and some Hemingway and Twain.
And then some newer stuff. I am a studying freak right now. And I have two short stories that I am about to go through with all the new information I’ve gleaned on Plot, Character, and Setting, before I submit them. I can already see things that need improvement. But they will each get only one pass, and then will be sent out.
And I have novels to write. I must get the first one done, just to get over that hurdle that’s not really a hurdle.
I have a stack of 20 research books that I want to read next to the stack of 6 I should read beside the books I promised to read and…oh…that doesn’t count what I’m writing…
My local Barns and Noble always seems to put mags out early. Read the story last week, loved it!
Sci-fi wise my B&N only carries Asimov’s and Analog, unfortunately. It’s too bad hard-copy periodicals are dying out.

It’s helpful to know that Borders does have things like that, even if I’ve never found them. I should be all set. I’ll let you know.
I subscribed to six months of Asimov’s, and I’m currently reading the most recent issue. I read Superluminosity and The Lovely Ugly, and am getting an idea of the type of stories that get into that market. (I’m also being entertained.)

This is as good a time as any to ask where someone would find something like that “on the newsstand.”
I’ve never been able to find genre magazines anywhere (though I did recently come across Strand), and I’m sure that means I’m just not looking in the right places.
I’d really love to hit the proper places and find a plethora of these wonderful items. Can you please point me in the right direction?
Sure. I don’t know where you’d find it in an independent bookstore, but in the chains, look near the puzzle magazines and the literary magazines on the lower shelves. Borders actually has a little display that they set up for the digest magazines.
