Free Fiction Monday: Boz

Boz got his job on the colony ship The Beautiful Dreamer because he’s a competent introvert. He enjoys the fact that he’s spending years completely alone, monitoring the passengers passing the time in cold sleep. So when he wakes up one morning to Christmas carols, he gets scared. Very scared. Who has joined him on the ship? And why torture him with Christmas cookies and mugs of hot cocoa? He needs to find out—and soon.

“Boz” by USA Today bestselling writer Kristine Kathryn Rusch is available for $2.99 (with bonus story) on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Smashwords, and in other ebookstores. Also available in print and e-book format in Five For The Winter Holidays and Silent Night: A Christmas Collection.

The free story will only be available for one week.  If you missed this one, click on the links above.  There’s another free story lurking somewhere around this site. Track it down, read, and enjoy.

So very sweet, thank you. There aren’t many SciFi Christmas stories with a cheery ending and I needed a happy ending today. Thank you.

Thanks for the story, Kris! It is perfect for me right now as well as being clever and short and charming. Which reminds me – off to see the Hobbit in 48fps Imax 3d. Hopefully that will be charming, too…

Love the story! I think it just became my favorite Christmas story.

  5. As someone who struggles with social anxiety, I’m surprised at how well you captured it in so few words. Particularly this: “Because he wasn’t good with words, especially words others would eventually hear.” Too true.

What a sweet little story! Just perfect for the holidays. And hmm, I think I’d like Boz’s job.
