Free Fiction Monday: The Rescue of the Renegat

Free Fiction Monday: The Rescue of the Renegat

This week’s Free Fiction Monday is something special. It is a way to sample my new Diving Universe novel, The Renegat, which was published last month. The novella “The Rescue of the Renegat,” which was first published in the January/February 2018 issue of Asimov’s, follows Captain Kim Dauber’s attempts to save the crew of a badly damaged ancient ship that suddenly appears out of foldspace. But the more they learn about the Renegat’s crew, the more mysterious deepens, revealing a thrilling tale of survival.

“The Rescue of the Renegat,” by Hugo Award-winning author Kristine Kathryn Rusch, was a finalist for the 2018 Asimov’s Readers Choice Award for best novella. It is available free on this website for one week only. To find out more about the events surrounding “The Rescue of the Renegat,” check out The Renegat, available in ebook, trade paperback, and hardcover here.

But if you intend to buy the book (you should), I would recommend not reading this. The book jumps back and forth in time, so you will find yourself reading new material, then something you already read, then new material, and so on.

I wish I had not read this back when it was in the Asimov magazine, because I find myself skimming the parts in the book which are familiar. I am probably missing any changes, but I don’t have the patience to find out.
