I wasn’t sure I was going to post about this, but Dean already did on his site, so I need to offer this to you folks here.
I do a craft mentorship, limited to a handful of people. It’s one-on-one work for people who want to improve their writing. The mentorship is usually full, but folks have been dealing with a lot in life and the world right now, and two people who signed up had to step away.
So…I have one spot open, and if one person does not renew, I might have two. (I’ll know that in a day or so.) This is first-come, first-serve. Also, you will be vetted for this. If you’ve taken courses on WMG’s Teachable site, then you have a leg up on someone who hasn’t. I prefer writers who have published a lot or done a lot of craft work with me and Dean, so I’m not telling them to unlearn bad habits taught in university courses. (Those never work for writers who want to be published as opposed to writers who want to be professors.)
Here are the details:
This would be a craft mentorship. I will work with the writers, helping them toward improving in areas that they feel they need to work on, or helping them in new genres.
What I have found as I do this is that a lot of writers have great voices and never learned the basics. So when I give them the early assignments, I find the places that they’ve skipped or never learned. Sometimes we work on very basic things. Sometimes very advanced things.
Often it will seem like I’m not getting the writer to their desired genre (usually sf or fantasy) as quickly as they’d like because in their contemporary fiction they’re missing something essential—usually setting. We focus on that a bit before moving to more advanced things.
If the writer already has a genre/skill down, I say so, and we work on something else. I’ve read some amazing stories this past year from excellent writers. I hope to do so in the coming months as well.
I’ve also set a hard time limit/assignment limit on working with folks. I will spend no more than a year with the students, which is why some of my students have timed out. (It’s a tad more complicated than that on the assignment level. See below.)
Right now, I’m offering a 6-month or 12-assignment program. First come, first serve. This is writing intensive. You’ll be doing an assignment specifically for me every two weeks. If nothing else, you’d get a lot of writing practice in.
The 6 month/12 assignment distinction is on my end. The mentorship ends with whichever comes first. It will end at 6 months, even if you only complete 4 assignments. It will end a little early if you never miss a deadline and complete all 12 assignments. (And go you!)

Please be warned. This is work intensive, and there will come a point where you’ll feel like you’re free falling. That will go away as we get through the personalized assignments.
